Zero pay rise, no recognition and disrespect towards members has led to strike, says GMB

More than 200 parking wardens and environmental officers across three London Boroughs are set to walk off the job from 7am on Monday 11 November until Midnight on Sunday 17 November.

The strike will take place across the boroughs of Wandsworth, Richmond and Lambeth, with members in Kingston also currently voting on whether to join their colleagues.

Members of GMB, the union for outsourced workers, voted to take action this weekend over a slew of workplace issues, including:

  • Not being offered a single penny in pay talks that lasted months
  • Leading the members on for months, and not negotiating in good faith
  • No recognition agreed for contracts in Kingston and Richmond
  • Harassment and intimidation of GMB members

The action is due to take place despite last-ditch talks which took place today, but did not end in an agreement to call off the strike.

Alex Etches, GMB Regional Organiser said:

“If the company continues to refuse to settle this dispute, there will be complete disfunction when it comes to ensuring the safe management of traffic and parking across South West London.

“These workers do a difficult and dangerous job for their local authorities, and it is vital that they are treated with respect.

“Workers are the ones that make these contracts run and without them companies like APCOA are nothing.

“This is a lesson that APCOA will soon learn if they continue to refuse to settle this dispute, people in Britain are ready to shake off the vampires that impoverish us all and win dignity in the work they do.”
